The Hidden Cottage & How We Are Exposing It

So if you have been subscribed to my blog for a while you will know that not only do I love Interior Styling and giving inspiration to others through my business and Interior Shop in Ashburton but I am also knee deep in a full on restoration which Atom Construction has now completely taken on. Some of you may have seen some of what I am writing about today but our progress is moving on and I know you guys like to see updates.

I have called it the hidden cottage not because its hard to find but because there are so many parts of the original cottage covered up and boarded over. The cottage was built in 1860 and has some lovely history with it. We are taking our time doing this up as we are planning and designing every part of it and of course living in it allows you to sit back and of course change your mind. We are now seeing some light actually we are quite literally seeing light due to a hidden window being exposed in the hallway and making the master bedroom a dual aspect.

Once upon a time our master bedroom was two rooms and had a ceiling. This blog is to show how we are getting on and the stages we have gone through to get to where we are now. I hope you enjoy.

The bedroom when we first bought the cottage.

As you see below this is the front window and was the master bedroom, it just wasn’t big enough. The second image was of the back window in the bedroom beside it.

So going back to the front bedroom, we started stripping down, there was a very strange cupboard that had a broken shower tray sink and a toilet in , you can see in the first photo, this of course had to go and the cupboard next to it as well. The ensuite was in fact hiding another feature as you will see below and I’m not talking about the Iron fireplace which is also pretty lovely.

So funny looking back now, we both had a feeling that the master bedroom was just not big enough so down came the wall so that the back room (photo number 2) would then make it dual aspect. Inspiration from one of my daughters who helped us come to the conclusion.

Once the wall was down we then decided the ceiling was going to come down, because the beams in the attic were so beautiful and needed to be on show. This room really shouted out for the wow factor.

When we had taken away the wall and the useless ensuite and then the ceiling we realised that these was a river stone fireplace being hidden!!! This was such a bonus for us, not only had we discovered those oak beams but also a stunning fireplace.

This was in need of re pointing and cleaning down but hey presto we have another feature.

The fireplace is floor to ceiling but due to us wanting this as the wall our bed will go against we decided to plaster up to where the headboard will go. Also the original fireplace outlet that was there wasn’t central so looked a little odd.

The stage we are at now is we have just finished the windows sills. We are all plastered, the radiators are ready to be fitted once the flooring is done. So lighting, flooring, heating and decorating.

So there you have it another progress update.

This cottage needs love time and of course money spent on it.

Doing it right is so important.

I look forward to giving you more updates soon.
